You will have to forgive us for discussing wild fires again, especially this time of year in the Northwest, but the Los Angeles fires are such a shock we need to catch your attention with that. There will be a lot of lessons and opinions coming out of that fire but one of the most striking will be why individual homes were left standing in the midst of the devastation.
Do you remember the meeting held at the Fox Island Fire Station 53 in January of 2024? That meeting was held in reaction to the Lahaina, Hawaii disaster. Individual home preparation for wildfires was a prime topic at that meeting and you can find Youtube video lessons on that subject on this Home Page at the pictures labeled 'Your Home Can Survive a Wildfire'. Check those out and placemark them for a quick reference as you tackle your landscaping this Spring.
You will see on our FICRA sign at the Fox Island bridge the bold statement 'Do You Know Who Your BLOCK COORDINATOR IS?' If you are not now in a coordinated neighborhood, or not sure, go the Block Coordinator tab on this Home Page to confirm your status on that and to get help correcting that. One of the conditions that will be cited on the LA fire is the lack of preparation. We are an island, potentially isolated in a disaster, and we definitely can't afford to let lack of preparation be the cause of preventable loss of lives and dwellings.
The new year is a good time for us all to do a check of our readiness. A good first step is to check the sometimes overlooked items in your ready kit like 'batteries charged, shelf life dates still good, is the generator tested, etc.'.
